Looking to the Future and Celebrating the Past
Lewisham has a long and fascinating history, but we know that not everybody who lives in or visits the area has the opportunity to discover, explore or celebrate it. This needs to change, and with our partners St. Mary the Virgin Church will be at the centre of making this change. We are currently creating an exciting programme that will not only help us secure the Church’s future as the Borough’s oldest building, but also ensure that everyone who lives, works or visits the Borough can explore Lewisham’s rich and varied heritage and culture for many years to come.
How will we do this?
Our project is called ‘St. Mary the Virgin Church — At the Heart of Lewisham’s Community and Heritage’. It has two parts:
1- We are working with Lewisham Council, local history groups, Goldsmiths College, schools and other partners to develop a programme of heritage activities including an exhibition within the church, opportunities for young people to research Lewisham’s history, heritage trails and
new learning resources for schools.
2 — Raising the money we need to enable us to make urgent repairs to the fifteenth century tower roof, chancel and the 6 other roofs, as well as installing a new heating system that will enable more people to visit and use the church throughout the year. This will all help to preserve the Church as an important community resource well into the future. This project provides a great opportunity to promote Lewisham’s diverse and ancient heritage to a much wider audience. We believe that everyone should be able to explore the history of Lewisham, and that this will promote people’s connection to where th’ey live and will bring people together from across all communities. The Church will host a new permanent exhibition about Lewisham’s history with easy to access guides about where to find more information (online, outside and at other locations including the Lewisham Local History & Archives Centre). Get in contact if you want to get involved.
If you have ideas for heritage or cultural activities we would love to hear, from you. This is a project for the community and we want everyone to be involve !
