St Mary the Virgin Lewisham- 1100 yrs in Lewisham

St Mary the Virgin Lewisham’s Historic Parish Church 918 AD- 2018

This year St Mary’s celebrate 1100 years of life at the heart of the community of Lewisham. A Royal Charter of September 918 AD marks the moment when the parish of Lewisham was gifted to the Benedictine Abbey of St Peter’s, Ghent. Princess Elfrida (Aelfthryth), daughter of Alfred the Great, married Baldwin, Count of Flanders and this link between Lewisham and Ghent was established.

The church has announced a series of celebratory services, concerts, talks and parties to give thanks for this great moment in the life of the Church and the beginning of Lewisham as a major settlement. The whole community in Lewisham is invited to share in the celebrations and learn about Lewisham’s ancient history — and future.
