Creekside Trust report on the R. Qaggy diesel spill

The Creekside Discovery Centre on Deptford Creek is a outdoor education and research hub based on the Deptford Creek. They offer a range of indoor and outdoor activities for all ages. Their teaching team were crucial to last weeks reporting of the Hither Green diesel spill to the Environment Agency. See highlights from their report below:

Last Thursday, while on Ha’penny Hatch with a school group, Brenna our Learning Deliverer noticed oil on the river.

It was covering the river down to Laban and there was a strong diesel smell.

We followed it upriver to q and Southwark Collehe where it was coming over the weir. We called the Environment Agency emergency line to report this.

On Friday morning we heard from Lawrence (Thames 21) that a private goods locomotive derailed at Hither Green and dropped a large amount of red diesel (1-5,000 litres) into the rail sidings. This found its was into Hither Green Ditch, which feeds into the River Quaggy just upstream of Manor Park.

Emergency contractors for the rail company, responded by placing booms across the river in Manor and Brookmill Park. The Environment Agency coordinated the clean up operation.

A tanker was also brought in to suck out the excess fuel  from the river at Manor Park and from the rail sidings. The Environment Agency coordinated the clean up operation.
