Forest School has arrived in Hither Green. James Hazlerigg-Kinlay, a local resident, has set up his Forest School in Manor Park, near the top river gate.
Sessions for all age groups are being offered – pre-school, primary school curriculam sessions and after-school clubs on Wednesday and Friday afternoons.
Forest School is a long-term, child-led process that offers children opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a local woodland environment. This is part of delivering the core curriculum and there are also strong links into Every Child Matters, Early Years Foundation Stage and Playwork Principles. We accommodate students with all different learning styles and needs.
We are based at Manor Park, which offers an excellent experience which is very close to what is found in the natural environment. Here we observe the natural world and the creatures within it.
All our staff are CRB checked and I am a trained Forest School leader and horticulturist, having worked at a Forest School in Twickenham for several years. I hold specialist Forest School insurance. I am also First Aid trained.
Both our school curriculum sessions and after school sessions include bark rubbing, looking for and identifying mini beast, plant identification, making dens, measuring trees, planting and digging and enjoying our natural environment.
A clear advantage of an effective outdoor area is that it provides the opportunity for children to see and touch natural materials. Children often choose natural pebbles to count with, or slices of wood to use as plates.
After school sessions – these sessions run from 3.30 – 5.30, we can collect a group from school and walk to the park. The sessions are in half-term blocks of 6 sessions and depending on numbers, we can combine 2 classes per half-term. Reception class only in summer terms. There are 12 spaces available for these sessions. Cost is £ 90.00
