Hither Green Week 2012, Sat 19th – Sun 27th May

Plans are already underway for the fourth annual Hither Green Week! Nine days of festivities – music, arts, film, dance, comedy, food, literature, circus, open gardens, local history and more! And all on our doorstep here in Hither Green. Details about the Week’s events will be revealed soon, so keep a look out on our HGCA website, noticeboards and follow us on Twitter @HGWeek

Can I Be Involved?

Certainly! There are several things you might like to contribute to.

Arts & Crafts Fayre, Sat 19th May: If you are a local arts, crafts or food trader and are interested in having a stall at the Fayre, then please complete and return the booking form. Places are limited and go fast!
Local entertainers, musicians and dancers are also invited to participate in the Week’s events. Please contact us if you are interested.
Tell us your favourite song, for a surprise singing finale event… email us with your song, why you like it and your name.
Tell us why you love Hither Green or a story or memory about Hither Green, for the first ever Hither Green exhibition. Email us with ‘I love Hither Green because……’ or ‘I remember in Hither Green when…’
Open Gardens, this popular event will again take place on Sun 20th May. If you are interested in ‘opening’ your garden, please get in touch.

Volunteers are needed to help us with the Week’s events, so please let us know if you’d like to get involved.

Belated Happy New Year!

We may be late but we have been busy. Since our last update quite a bit has changed, we’ve attended the FUSS Christmas Fayre, added a swathe of new content to the website and plans for this year’s Hither Green Week have been drawn together. Here’s some of what we’ve been doing.

Galleries

We’ve added four galleries to the site with plans for more. If you’d like to take a look at our community garden, see what happened during the early days of the embankment project or what happened at last year’s Hither Green Week then there’s a gallery for you.

Information

We’ve also added more information about the association itself. There are links to our constitution and last annual report under the ‘About’ section in the main menu. We’ve also uploaded the committee biographies contributed by our committee members at the last open meeting.

More on the way

We’ve fleshed out the menu, adding space for information about this year’s Hither Green Week and our community Resources section. We’ll be working on these over the coming days and weeks.

Hither Green Cinema Presents: Sing A-Long Sound of Music

Sunday 18th December 2011 – Doors open at 6pm, film to start at 6.30pm

St Swithun’s Hall, St Swithun’s Road off Hither Green Lane and Ennersdale Road

It’s a story of a woman who leaves the convent…….. Wait a minute! Do you need me to tell you what the film is about?

You may not want to admit you know the words but secretly you know you do (and if you don’t they will appear at the bottom of our screen to help you) so come along, dress up as one of the characters or just in your favourite frilly dress (and maybe bring a cushion or 2 as it is a long film), pop along and we will supply the mulled wine and mince pies along with Zero Degrees beer from the Blackheath micro brewery, wine, tea, coffee, savoury snacks and cakes.

Tickets are still a low £3, and are on sale (and have been selling fast) in advance at the Cafe of Good Hope and Cooper Locke Gallery in Hither Green Lane and You Don’t Bring Me Flowers in Staplehurst Road. Doors open at 6pm and the film is due to start at 6.30pm. If you can’t get a ticket in advance, come early as we had to turn people away at last years Christmas screening.

Nope, not the huge blue ones, but rather the small picture type things that sit next to posts, comments and forum entries. We’ve now made it possible for you to upload a small picture of yourself or a moniker to make it just that little bit easier to see who you are communicating with.

So how do you do it?

Simple. First you need a small image in jpg format. By small we mean less than 50kb, Microsoft Office Picture Manager has a great compress feature than you can use for this. Just open your image, select ‘compress’ and choose ‘email’ from the set of preset compression levels.

Once you have a small image to use you’ll need to be registered on the site. Once you’re registered log in and using the bar at the top of the screen click on your username. A drop down menu will appear and you should choose, edit my profile. While you’re there why not complete some of the other fields?

At the bottom of the page is an avatar select option. Click on the button and select your little image using the pop up window that appears. Once you’ve done that click on save changes and your avatar will be there for all to see.

We’re going to be doing a lot of work on the site over the next few days. Keep your eyes peeled for improvements near you!

New Contact Form Installed

We’re going to be busy behind the scenes over the next few days, in fact some things have changed already. Not least among them is our new contact form.

No matter where you are in the HGCA site there’ll always be a small grey button on the right hand of your screen. One click and a form opens and you can email us right from the page.

We’ll keep you posted on our progress as we update the site over the weeks to come but if you have any suggestions as to how we could better serve the community in Hither Green then why not let us know, you could try out our new button while you’re at it!

Volunteers Needed at the Embankment

This coming Saturday, the 24th September, we’ll be busy working to further improve the embankment. Why not join us?

Session Details:

Saturday 24th Sept
10.00 through 16.00

What to Do:

Meet us at the steps to Platform 1. You’ll find them off Springbank Road as shown by the little yellow man in the map below. You can click on the map to see a larger version.

Who’s Welcome?

We need as many volunteers as possible; everyone’s welcome. Unfortunately, for safety reasons, only adults can be allowed into the embankment project so while under 18′s are welcome to come along to watch and provide moral support only those 18 and older can actually assist in the work.

All required tools, safety boots and refreshments will be provided on the day.

What will be be doing?

We’ll be clearing away the overgrown vegetation, clearing litter and making the place look fab!

This all day session will be attended by specialists from BTCV who will be advising us on monitoring bio-diversity and how to go about the sustainable management of the site.

What if I can’t make it?

Don’t worry. There are plenty of other events to choose from.

HGCA Open Meeting, AGM and election of new Committee members

This meeting will be held at the Scout Hall on Springbank Road. All are welcome.

This is a great opportunity for you to find out more about what is going on in Hither Green. If you are interested in getting involved and joinnig the Committee, get in touch!

Virtual Community Noticeboard

We’ve been busy here at OurHitherGreen. We’re pleased to announce that the virtual version of our Beacon road noticeboard is now online. Why not take a look here.
