On Saturday the 9th of July, LCS returns to the glorious setting of Holy Trinity Church, Sloane Square to perform our Entente Musicale – a sparkling mix of French and English music from the early and mid 20th century.
Amidst Arts & Craft and pre-Raphaelite splendour, the choir sings a Messe Solennelle by the virtually blind organist Louis Vierne – described as ‘a worthy retort to Fauré’s Requiem‘ – and a heartfelt prayer for peace by the young, prizewinning Lili Boulanger entitled Vieille prière bouddhique.
To represent this side of the Channel the choir turns to two works by Benjamin Britten: his short motet Deus in adjutorium meum, and his scintillating and celebratory setting of the words of the 18th century mystic poet Christopher Smart under the title Rejoice in the Lamb.
Cat lovers will particularly enjoy the ode to Smart’s companion Jeoffry!
