New gardens: The Abbotshall Road Community Garden were open for the first time this weekend. It’s been several years in the making and the result of a tremendous amount of work by local people- it’s a real community led victory.
Pocket Park funding from the Mayor of London has supplied the brilliant new raised bed systems. Some are at child height, others are wheelchair height.
This weekend the community filled the new beds and the Catford ‘Bulbs in Bloom’ bulbs went in too- planted by 20 volunteers and 10 kids!
Community-led development: The Corbett Resident’s Association and the Archibald Corbett Society are having a transformative effect, bringing fantastic facilities into the heart of their area. The garden will supply the new community cafe which will be run by Delicious Most Nutritious as part of the new onsite 300sqm Health and Wellness Centre. Local people and health professionals will make use of the treatment and training rooms and there are meeting rooms for workshops too. The modular building will be open for business in January.
Sports Development: The Corbett Groups are working with Community Teachsport and Sport England to bring the playing fields up to FA charter standard- it will be home base to several Lewisham teams.
Hundreds of tonnes of topsoil have been brought in and seeded with top quality grass seed to make the perfect playing surface.
There are also four new cricket pitches!
With an iron grip on their budget, a forensic eye for detail and open consultation with their community, these groups have made every penny of their funding work for them. #ABeaconProject
