Life is exciting and fun for Brownies in Hither Green this autumn!
Article by Siona of St Swithun’s Brownies.
The 6th Catford Brownies meet just off Hither Green Lane and currently have spaces for more girls to join. Brownies is for girls aged 7-10, but as we have a large number of 9 year olds at the moment we’re keen for some younger girls to join and to stay with us for a few years.
Recently the 6th Catford Brownies and 3rd Hither Green Brownies joined forces, with artist Leah Reeves to create a mosaic to celebrate the 100th birthday of Brownies. This mosaic is now proudly displayed outside Hither Green Station for all to see. See the Mosaic here.
Through regular meetings, special events, day trips, sleepovers, camps and holidays, Brownies learn new hobbies, play music, explore other cultures and get adventurous outdoors.
Brownies become a member of a Six, a unit with a name such as Badger, Fox, Squirrel or Rabbit and follow a programme called the Brownie Adventure. The name reflects the world of exciting opportunities, challenges and fun that is Brownies.
Girls can also extend their knowledge and abilities by working towards Brownie interest badges. For example this year we worked towards the Hostess, Entertainer and Musician badges by putting on a show for our families and helped to raise £190 for Oxfam at the same time. We’ve also achieved our Booklover, Number Fun and Artist badges and have been working towards a series of challenges to celebrate the Big Brownie Birthday.
We’ve been on many trips, including visiting the Science Museum, the Catford pantomime, sailing on the Thames and a sleepover with 100 other brownies.
